1. Plan Ahead

Opening day at Breckenridge can get busy, so it’s crucial to plan ahead to make the most of your day.

Lift Ticket and Season Pass:

Purchase your lift ticket or ensure your season pass is ready in advance. Buying online can save you time and money compared to purchasing at the ticket window. It can cost hundreds more to purchase at the window versus ahead of time – if the resort still has tickets!

If you are a local or a frequent visitor, an Epic Pass will save you money and allow you to visit other Colorado resorts. Sometimes, you only need to ski 4 or 5 days to experience the payoff. Epic also offers day passes, and Summit County passes, which can be used at multiple resorts.

Arrive at the resort well before the lifts open. This not only gives you a head start on the slopes but also allows you to find parking more easily and avoid long lines.

Equipment Rentals:

The earlier you book your gear the better! Book online with Breckenridge Ski & Sport for 30% off all winter rentals, including skis, snowboards, and kids rentals. We recommend booking as soon as you know your travel dates to ensure   everyone in your party gets the exact rentals they want. Then, you can also skip the lines the day of. Simply stop in, pick up, and hit the slopes as soon as you get into town.

Accommodation:

If you are coming from out of town, secure your Breckenridge lodging well in advance. Breckenridge offers a variety of accommodation options, from slope side condos to charming mountain cabins, and Airbnb options.

Transportation:

Whether you are flying into Colorado or a local, navigating winter weather and Colorado driving conditions can be tricky. We recommend our favorite local airport shuttle provider, Peak 1 Express, for your trip between Breckenridge and DIA. Peak 1 Express will drop you directly at your lodging, so you can spend more time planning your mountain fun, less time worrying about your transportation.

2. Dress Appropriately

Opening day at Breckenridge can be cold, so dress in layers and wear the right gear. Make sure to have:

  • Waterproof and insulated clothing.
  • Warm gloves or mittens.
  • A quality ski or snowboard jacket.
  • Goggles with low-light lenses for potentially overcast days.
  • A helmet for safety.
  • Warm base layers to stay comfortable.

4. Respect Mountain Etiquette

Opening day often brings together seasoned and novice riders. Respect the mountain etiquette by yielding to the uphill skier, giving space to slower riders, and always skiing or riding in control. Courtesy on the slopes ensures a positive experience for all.

5. Embrace Early Season Conditions

Opening day conditions can vary, and you may encounter some early-season challenges. Be prepared for:

Variable snow conditions: Early-season skiing can mean variable snowpack. Be ready for everything from packed powder to some icy patches.

Limited terrain: Not all runs may be open, especially on opening day. Embrace the available terrain and enjoy the first turns of the season. Check Breckenridge’s lift and terrain status before you go.

Crowds: Opening day can be crowded. Remember to maintain your patience, especially in lift lines.
