Skiing in Breckenridge Colorado

Overview of Breckenridge Ski Resort

Breckenridge Ski Resort is located in the town of Breckenridge, Colorado, just 80 miles west of Denver. Breckenridge ski resort is renowned for its vast and diverse terrain, featuring four interconnected peaks: Peaks 6, 7, 8, and 9. The resort offers over 2,900 acres of skiable terrain, catering to all skill levels; however, the ski resort is known for its large amount of expert terrain.

Breckenridge is also a mecca for terrain park enthusiasts. The resort includes several world-class terrain parks, including the renowned Park Lane. From beginners to seasoned park riders, there are features and lines designed to accommodate various skill levels

Breckenridge resort history dates to December 1961 when the area officially opened as a ski resort with just the Peak 8 ski area, one double chairlift and a T-bar. In 1984, Breckenridge resort was the first Colorado resort to welcome snowboarders, with the first snowboard World Cup held at the resort. It also boasts the highest chairlift in North America, the Imperial Express lift. 

In 1996, Breckenridge merged with Vail Resorts, a major player in the ski industry that owns and operates several world-class resorts. Breckenridge has since gained recognition for its commitment to freestyle skiing and snowboarding, developing world-class terrain parks that attracted professional athletes and hosted Dew Tour, among other events. 

The town of Breckenridge is also known as the host of the International Snow Sculpture Championships, an annual event where teams from around the world create intricate sculptures from large blocks of snow.

Know Before You Go

Climate

Breckenridge is usually open for skiing and snowboarding from November through May. Winter temperatures at Breckenridge can be chilly, with average daytime highs ranging from the teens to the low 30s Fahrenheit. Nighttime temperatures often drop well below freezing, providing optimal conditions for snow accumulation and maintenance of ski slopes. The resort’s elevation, with a base at around 9,600 feet and peaks reaching over 12,800 feet, contributes to the cold temperatures and consistent snowfall. Be sure to check the Breckenridge Resort weather before you go.

The resort usually receives plenty of snow, with an average annual snowfall of approximately 282 inches and 72 days of snowfall. March reaps with highest average snowfall, with December and then January coming in second and third. Breckenridge is known for its skiing, partially due to its high annual snowfall.

Lift Times

Most Breckenridge Resort lifts run from 8:30 AM to 4 PM with some running 9 AM to 3:30 PM

Check lift times and status before your Breckenridge trip. Lifts may also be more limited early in the season.

Lift Tickets

Breckenridge Resort offers several options for lift tickets.

Breckenridge also has the option to buy daily lift tickets for up to 7 days. Lift tickets may be sold out or limited in number, so be sure to book your ticket as soon as you know your ski dates.

Getting to Breckenridge

From Denver, head west on I-70 West, taking in the scenic drive through the Rocky Mountains.

Continue on I-70 West for approximately 80 miles. Look for Exit 203, which will take you toward US-9 South and Breckenridge. Merge onto US-9 South and follow the signs for Breckenridge.

Travel about 10 miles on US-9 South, and you’ll reach the charming town of Breckenridge and the resort.For travelers arriving at Denver International Airport (DIA) heading to Breckenridge ski resort, an airport shuttle proves to be the most convenient choice. We suggest using Peak 1 Express, a reputable local shuttle service offering direct transportation from DIA to Breckenridge. Enjoy a seamless journey to your Breckenridge lodging or take advantage of a discounted shuttle service to Breckenridge Station.

On-Site Transportation & Parking

Breckenridge Resort offers paid parking in several lots with easy access to the slopes. Visitors can also park downtown and ride the BreckConnect Gondola directly to Peaks 7 and 8. The Breck FreeRide bus also offers free transportation throughout Breckenridge, making it easy to get around without a car.

Ski & Snowboard Runs

Beginner “Green” Runs

11% of trails at Breckenridge Resort are beginner trails, with designated learning areas at the bases of Peaks 8 and 9. The QuickSilver Super 6 chair offers access to several concentrated green runs on Peak 9. The Snowflake, Rip’s Ride, and Five Superchair on Peak 8 also access an area of beginner trails.

Beginner Runs

  • Lower Four O’Clock — Located on Peak 8, Lower Four O’Clock is one of the longest green runs in North America, stretching for over four miles. The trail winds its way down the mountain through scenic terrain, offering a gentle slope suitable for beginners. The 4 O’Clock blue trail leads into the Lower 4 O’Clock creating fun long run for more advanced beginners looking to step up their game.
  • Silverthorne — On Peak 9, Silverthorne is a gentle green run offering a smooth and consistent pitch, making it an excellent option for beginners to build confidence.
  • The Lower Lehman Trail and Frontier Run — These two shorter runs on Peak 9 create an opportunity for beginners to practice in a calmer environment, while navigating through some tree-lined area.

Intermediate “Blue” Runs

Breckenridge’s Intermediate runs make up 31% off its trail system and are spread out across Peaks 6,7,8, and 9.

Intermediate Runs

  • Kensho SuperChair — The Peak 6 area features several blue runs, such as Bliss, Deja Vu, and Euphoria, offering wider groomed terrain. The Kensho SuperChair provides access to these intermediate runs with beautiful panoramic views along the way.
  • Independence and Freedom Superchairs — Off of Peak 7, the Independence and Freedom Superchairs allow skiers and riders to reach a plethora of blue runs. Longer trails in this area include Lincoln Meadows, Wirepatch, and Claimjumper. These trails wind through picturesque landscapes, featuring a mix of groomed sections and tree-lined paths, allowing intermediates to refine their skills in a varied and engaging environment.
  • Crescendo — Peak 8’s Crescendo trail, accessed from the Colorado Superchair or the Peak 8 Super Connect, is an exciting run for intermediate skiers and riders to send it down some easier bumps, with opportunities to merge back onto groomed terrain on the side.
  • Bonanza, Briar Rose, and Cashier — The Peak 9 area hosts a variety of blue runs, including Bonanza, Briar Rose, and Cashier. These runs provide a great mix of terrain features, allowing intermediates to progress their skills. Cashier is considered an easier blue run, and Bonanza is recognized as a learning area, signifying skiers and riders should slow down. Briar Rose provides a step up with more tree packed areas and rollers throughout.

Expert “Black Diamond” Runs

Breckenridge Ski Resort boasts a variety of challenging and exhilarating advanced runs, providing a thrilling experience for expert skiers and snowboarders. 24% of Breckenridge terrain is considered advanced and 34% considered expert, with the latter comprising the largest area within the ski resort.

Advanced & Expert Runs

  • Windows — On Peak 9, Windows is a challenging run with steep pitches and moguls, providing an exciting experience for advanced skiers. This area features narrow dips between trees and allows (very) advanced skiers to practice tight turns.
  • Ore Bucket — Ore Bucket is a challenging run on Peak 7, featuring steep pitches, moguls, and varied terrain. This area is wooded area, providing plenty of opportunities for tree skiing. It’s also often less crowded, so skiers and riders can peacefully enjoy a bit of backcountry at the resort. 
  • Beyond Bowl & Serenity Bowl — Both located on Peak 6, these areas offer steep pitches, powder-filled bowls, and challenging gladed terrain. Serenity Bowl is marked as Extreme Terrain, while Beyond Bowl is classified as Most Difficult Terrain. Take in the bowls’ unmatched views, while enjoying the resort’s steepest skiing and riding. Across the tops of Peaks 6,7, and 8, skiers and riders will find a large area of advanced and expert terrain, including even more exciting bowls to explore.

Breckenridge Ski Resort is renowned for its exceptional terrain parks, attracting freestyle enthusiasts from around the world. The resort features multiple terrain areas with a variety of features and levels of difficulty, catering to everyone from beginners to seasoned park riders. Located on Peak 8, the Freeway Terrain Park is one of Breckenridge’s flagship parks, offering a diverse range of features, including jumps, rails, and boxes. Also situated on Peak 8, Park Lane is known for its creative layout and innovative features.
