Tips for Traveling in the Mountains with Kids

From altitude adjustment to snack hacks and layering tricks, these parent-approved tips will help your mountain getaway stay fun, safe, and meltdown-free.

1. Prepare for Altitude

Hydration is key. Kids dehydrate faster, especially at high altitudes. Take it slow on the first day to adjust; don’t push for a full ski day right after arrival. Watch for altitude sickness: headaches, nausea, fatigue. Rest and hydrate if symptoms appear.

2. Layer Up Properly

Dress kids in moisture-wicking base layers, insulating mid-layers, and waterproof outer layers. Avoid cotton, it gets wet and stays cold. Pack extra gloves and socks, kids lose and soak them easily.

3. Choose a Family-Friendly Resort

Look for: Beginner slopes or “bunny hills,” Ski schools with certified instructors for kids, Daycare or indoor play areas for younger children, Short walk or shuttle to lifts

4. Book Lessons Early

Ski and snowboard lessons for kids fill up fast, especially during holidays. Group lessons are great for socializing and learning with peers. Many ski schools offer half-day or full-day options, consider energy levels and weather.

5. Pack Smart (and Light) for the Slopes

Snacks, sunscreen, lip balm, tissues, and hand warmers are essentials. Bring a small backpack or use jacket pockets smartly. Use gear labels, kids will take off their gloves, helmet, etc., and gear gets mixed up easily.

6. Protect Against the Sun

Snow reflects UV rays, apply sunscreen and lip balm with SPF even on cloudy days. Make sure kids wear UV-protective goggles or sunglasses when not skiing.

7. Plan for Breaks

Kids get cold and tired faster than adults. Take breaks often to warm up, eat, and rest. Hot chocolate is a great motivator!

8. Expect (and Accept) Setbacks

Meltdowns, lost mittens, and off days are normal. Keep your expectations flexible, sometimes building a snowman or sledding is just as fun.

9. Drive Safely

Carry chains or have snow tires if driving in snowy areas. Keep extra food, water, warm blankets, and a fully charged phone in the car. Plan around weather forecasts, mountain roads can close or get dangerous fast.

Skip the hassle of driving in mountain weather! Peak 1 Express offers safe, reliable, and comfortable transportation to Breckenridge with spacious seating, room for all your ski gear, and complimentary child safety seats. Call (970) 423-7033 or visit Peak 1 Express.

Want to take a break from skiing and try something a little more playful? At Breckenridge Ski & Sport, we offer sled rentals starting at just $10/day (for a Flexible Flyer or saucer) to help your family enjoy the snow in a new way. Whether it’s toddlers testing their first slide or teens doing lap after lap, sledding is a low-barrier, high-fun option for all ages.

Sled at Carter Park

Just a few blocks from Main Street, Carter Park (300 S High Street) is a popular local hill for sledding. It’s free to use and ideal for families wanting close, convenient access. Be aware that parking is limited so arriving early helps you snag a spot.

Family Rental FAQs

Are there different levels of equipment?

There are! We offer different ski equipment packages based on your ability. For snowboards, we have an excellent all-mountain snowboard that is perfect for any snow condition, but equipment does not differ between skill levels.

Can I pick up my kids' rental for them?

A huge part of ensuring everyone’s safety on the mountain is getting an accurate boot fitting and ski/board size for the rider(s), this is why we require all riders to be present when picking up gear. This can help avoid injuries and keep everyone comfortable for a day on the mountain.

Can my spouse or friend pick up my rental for me?

Like most outdoor activities skiing and snowboarding come with inherent risks, some of which are associated with binding releases. Because of these risks anyone over the age of 18 needs to be present to sign a liability waiver prior to equipment being released. Equipment will only be released to the party it was fitted for.

Do I need to be present to rent equipment for my child?

Minors under the age of 18 will need a guardian over 18 years old with them to sign a liability waiver on their behalf. If your child will be traveling without you, you may fill out their waiver ahead of time. Please reach out to Breckenridge Ski & Sport if this is the case.

What gear is included in a kids’ rental package?

Our standard kids’ packages include skis or snowboard, boots, and poles (for skiers). Helmets are available as an add-on.

How long does the rental fitting take for families?

Most families are in and out within 20–30 minutes. Our team is trained to make fittings quick, safe, and stress-free.
